Careers: Arts/artist's agents

Question
I am interested in working as an artist's agent. Although I am also an artist, I would rather be an artist on my own terms and make a living doing something related and exciting in the business world. I live in the Chicago area and would like your advice on how to get started working as an agent. I'd also like to know what you think about beginning such a career with no money to invest in it. Thanks so much, I look forward to learning more from you.

Answer
Hello........to be a successful agent you need three things:
1. Great art
2. Good gallery contacts
3. Private customers

Artists generally are leary of "agents"........but if you can line up a few and then make calls on galleries or if you have a customer base established, then you are in business.

Let me warn you........it isn't easy.  Many galleries prefer working directly with artists.....but if you do represent someone they are desparate to exhibit, then you'll do OK.

Try some of the major art houses......talk to some of their reps, and see what advise they can offer.

good luck!
