Question
Hello,

Is it a 'generally' accepted practice for an artist rep to expect a fee ($325) to represent an artist. I know that there are advertising cost, etc. to consider, but $325 plus 30%  of work found by the agency sounds a bit excessive.

I have curent representation for free, with 25% agent cost for work found, so that's why I'd like to know if an agent who charges a fee up front is someone who can be expected to find work for the artist or is just a company out to make a buck from the artist. I'm thinking the latter, but I don't want to jump to conclusions!

Thank you

Answer
Hello Denise,

Your gut reaction is right.

I would seriously question any artist rep that wants an up front fee for just getting your foot in the door.  Most reps charge a flat percentage based upon results.  For example my gallery charges 20% for commission referrals [portraits et al].  I know of another agent who charges 30% for works sold directly to clients.

So....my advice....go with your gut.

best wishes,
