Question
I've thought of donating just one painting to a few important art collectors, as a way to get my pictures into their collection. However, I'm an unknown artist. How should I do this?

They might accept the submission, or simply return it.

Answer
Hello Jim,

This is an accepted way of getting your works noticed.  By collectors I assume you are referring to museums.....as they do accept works [some of the smaller ones] from artists.  I would make contact with a select number by first sending a letter indicating your interest in their collection and your offer of one of your works [include a photograph of the work or works].  Don't just send the work by itself.

Private collectors generally don't want works that are donated to them.....but if you are aware of someone who does, then by all means make a contact with this collector as indicated above.

All the best,
