ANSWER: Dear Sara,

I wish I could give you a straight forward answer to this one, but unfortunately, it's a very trial and error environment. I personally prefer the method of having my own website and directing everyone I know to that. For free sites, as long as you don't see anything odd up front, feel free to use them to your heart's content. Consider putting a watermark on your posted artwork to prevent random image stealing. The more you use the better. Posting artwork can sometimes be like pollinating for flowers, the more seeds you can throw around, the more likely you are to get something, but no site can offer a guarantee. For those that charge, be very wary. Try to research them as much as possible. Try even to contact another artist that uses that site to ask if they are satisfied with it.

Also, consider joining online gallery exhibits. You may join onto the Art Deadlines List mailing list(www.artdeadlineslist.com) which posts multiple gallery shows and the like both for real, brick and mortar galleries and the online variety.

You can also use free networking sites such as myspace.com to creatively network and put even more artwork out there.

Hope this helps you get started!
Sincerely,
Gianina

QUESTION: what's a water mark?
thanks,
sara

Answer
Hello Sara,

A watermark is an image or text or a logo that you put over another image, almost like a label, without obstructing the actual image itself. Original watermarking is created during the actual production of the paper (think of the barely visible presidential portraits you see on the newer U.S. dollars to prevent counterfeiting), but you can simulate the same effect digitally. A good example of what I'm talking about can be seen at www.bigstockphoto.com (or any stock photo site for that matter). When you click on any image, you see the Big Stock Photo logo placed lightly over the picture. This keeps people from being able to just copy and paste the photo without paying for it.

Let me know if you need further explanation!
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Gianina
