Subject: I NEED Career Advice

Question
I graduated from Johns Hopkins University, with a degree in Sociology in 2005. However over the past few years, I have tried to follow a career in college coaching, with limited financial success. Now, I feel I need a change in my career path for a successful future. The job market is getting smaller and more complex by the day and I have no experience in any business criteria. I'm not sure what my next move should be?

Answer
Hi Kyle.
This is a tough one. I don't think there are any easy answers for you. A degree in Sociology isn't going to get you much of anywhere unless you wanted to be a professor and that would require getting a Ph.D..
Do you want to go back to school? If so, you'd have to know where you were headed and my impression is that you're really unsure about what to do next.
I don't know where you live, but I think you need a career counselor. That person can put you through a battery of tests to see what you're good at and what you like. Once you're clear about your skills and your desires, you can plot a course to get yourself there. But I think it will be hard for you to do it alone unless you're willing to spend a lot of time to do the research and network yourself. I'd suggest getting some clarity with some help before you even consider networking.
Can you get help from the John Hopkins career placement people or through the Alumni office?
I think your best bet is to find someone to help you through the maze.
Best of luck.
Lois
