Question
Would you consider tech writing a good field to break into at this time?  I have an undergraduate degree and good writing skills and am moderately versed in some technologies.  I am hoping to develop my skills through a master's program for tech. writing.  Do you see good opportunities for virtual writers?  Much thanks!

Answer
Hi Gary,

Unfortunately, I can not give you a solid answer on technical writing.  As far as I have seen in the past 5 years, there has always been a need for technical writers.  Not as much as say coders or testers, but there has been a need.

As for programs, I had a very good friend who was a technical writer and she went through a technical writing course, where her teacher recommended her for a job where she ended up.  She did not get a degree for technical writing.

Good technical writers are hard to come by.  Mostly because it is difficult to find technically competent people who can interface with people who are developing the product, but also someone who can explain difficult technology to customers in a way that makes sense.

What I would recommend is to approach people in the industry in the area and ask for a reputable program in the area you can participate in.

Sorry for lack of details but that's about as much as I can offer.

Good luck,

-L
