Expert: Richard Stooker Date: 4/2/2008 Subject: IT Career Direction Advice Needed
Question Richard,
I have recently changed directions with my life and decided to follow a lifelong passion of mine...COMPUTERS! Constantly changing technology and the challenges that it presents has always been an interest of mine.
I am currently studying for my A+, Network+, Server+, Security+, and MCSA exams. I have been studying for approximately 7 months and my goal is to be fully prepared to take my exams this fall (September or November).
The reason that I changed direction is that I really was unhappy in my previous occupation. I felt unchallenged and extrememely bored with my previous occupation (Industrial Sales and Management). My problem is that IT is such a new field to me, I'm not quite sure where I might fit in.
I believe that my strongest assets are my communication skills and my ability to interact with people. I have an upbeat personality and enjoy working with others. I have always done well in whatever I have done where I needed to use those skills (management, etc).
My question is: Can you think of a job where I may be able to showcase my communication skills? I realize that almost every employer may find this an asset. However, it would really be nice to find something that could combine both my people skills (and experience) with my technical knowledge.
I look forward to your reply. Thanks!
Answer Hi, Cory,
A good people person with a bunch of techies?
You'll be the red frog in the middle of the green ones!
I suggest you aim for Project Management. You'll have to manage
the techies and also maybe communicate with clients.
And it's more money that pure techies skills command.
But you have to prove yourself with your technical skills, so focus
on them. Sounds like you have a good plan.
Just keep going, and once you've got your feet in the door, check
out Project Management books and classes, and certifications.
