Question
Dear Mr NewMyer,

I situation is simpler to the computer science guy. I am 24 and just completed my engineering degree in Mechatronics. I have over the years during my degree lost interest in engineering and looking to get into managment, especially aviation management since I always wanted to become a pilot but my eye site is poor. My question therefore is as follow:

1. I am quite convinced that I need to do a masters degree in aviation so that I can specialize in that field, gain some knowledge in aviation/management and at the same time complete my master degree. Is this the right thinking? Or is there a better alternative to masters degree in aviation management?

2. What are the good institution either in the UK or Austrilia and NZ that offers aviation management? So far I've noticed only RMIT&Griffith in AUZ.

Thanks for your time. Please feel free to add any suggestions that you may want to offer.

Answer
Hi,

It is nice to hear from you, I will try to assist!

First of all, I am not aware of schools in Australia or New Zealand....I am sorry that I can not help with that part of your question.

Second, as far as doing a master's degree in aviation, yes, either an MBA in Aviation or a Master's in Aviation, Aviation Management or some related field would be a good choice for someone wanting to get into the field.  As you point out, aviation knowledge is key, so, whatever aviation master's degree you select, make sure that it has as much aviation conent as possible.  That will help you transition to the aviation field from your master's degree program.  Also, try to go with a program that gives you as much technology training as possible as well as a program that gives you as much personal attention as possible from the faculty.  In my experience with two master's degrees, the personal attention from the faculty was key to my success in both degrees and in gaining a good job after they were completed.

All the best,
