Question
Hi David. I'm in a bit of a situation regarding which degree to follow. The decision I'm facing is regarding whether to go to the less expensive state school which will accept more credits from my AA degree, or to go aviation specific private institution which is more expensive and will take longer. Will the Aviation Management specific BS provide me with more opportunity in the aviation industry vs. a regular Business Administration degree? I'm just wondering if the money spent on the expensive aviation specific degree will make me more marketable in the industry that I love, or at least put me in a better position than the general Business Degree from the state school. Also, any pointers you can give me on opportunities for women in aviation would be great. Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hi,

There is no doubt that the Aviation Management degree will put you in a better position with regard to aviation positions after you graduate.  The other thing that should guide you is "do what you love" in that  you should select a degree in a field that you love.  A general business degree will not educate you about the nuances of the aviation field, nor will it necessarily give you case study examples of aviation subjects.  The Aviation Management degree will give you that.

As far as opportunities for women are concerned, they are excellent.  Aviation for years was a male-dominated industry.  It is much less so today....the President of Southwest Airlines, for example, is Colleen Barrett (although I think she is retiring this year).  The bottom line is that the sky is the limit!  Also, check out the website of Women in Aviation International.  They have a fantastic annual conference that is something you should attend just to meet lots of female aviation role models.....

Take care,
