Question
Hi,

I have a BSc in OHS and have been working in the construction industry as a safety manager. I am now looking at going back to do my masters, I am trying to decide between Risk Management or Master in Aviation management. Aviation management looks very interesting but i dont know how the job prospects with that qualification especially with the current economic meltdown.

Answer
Hi,

Thank you for your question, I will try to assist.  I think that the important consideration in your instance is that you have been working in occupational safety and health/general safety management and have a Bsc degree in that area.  You do not mention having any background in aviation.  Therefore, when you get your master's degree, the question is:  What qualfications do I have to go with my master's degree to help me gain employment?  It would appear to me that, given your prior background, the Risk Management masters might be a better choice.

The employment prospects for someone with a Master's in Aviation Management would be primarily in the airports area, and, perhaps, with some airlines and a very few aviation manufacturers.  In the airports area, you could work with an airport in areas like airport management, airport operations, airport marketing and airport planning.  However, your chances for employment in those areas would be greatly enhanced if you had some background in any of the same areas.

I hope that this helps you in your decision about which way to go.

Sincerely,
