Question
QUESTION: I talked to an advisor at UAA about the 18 month program.  When I told her I'd be 30 1/2 when I graduated, she told me I wouldn't have enough time to get hired.  She said that you need to get hired before you enter the FAA Academy.
I was disappointed because you said that if I was accepted to the FAA Academy within 6 months, I would be "already hired" and would have two years to get hired at a location even though I would be over 31.   CAn you please help me with this ?

ANSWER: Pete,
Maybe i misunderstood your age.  How old are you now?  When will you start the 18 month program?  How old will you be when you finish the program.
When you are hired you have to be under 31.  The FAA academy is a US govt facility and you have to be an FAA employee to go the the academy.

Thanks

Dacus

QUESTION: I turned 28 in June...I'd be 30 1/2 yrs old when I graduate.  There is an 18 month program that starts this summer.  You should look at the answer you gave me last week...I would have six months to get hired...Is that enough time or is it not worth the risk?  I heard the FAA was going to be hiring a lot of ATC's.  Thanks

Answer
Pete,
I looked at my answer, and like I said before I really have no idea.  I am not a personnel specialist, I am an air traffic controller.  Air traffic controllers do not hire people, personnel does.

If you are concerned that after going to school for 18 months that you may not have enough time to get hired, then I think that you should concentrate on watching for the "all sources" openings.  There may not be any within the next three years or there may be one tomorrow.  There are no guarantees.  It just depends on how bad you want to be a controller.
If you take the ATSAT and pass before you reach age 31 will you still get hired.  I don't know, like I said before, some say yes, some say no, I guess it depends on the personnel specialist who has your file.  You pay your money you take your chances.  I told you of my experience, I was 31 and 1/2 when I got hired.

The thing to remember is that you have to pass the ATSAT to get hired.  Whether you go to the CTI School or not.  My son took the test in Oct and was hired the following Feb.  Will that work for you, I don't know, noboby does.

Pete I get the feeling you want definitive answers, I can't give them to you.  I don't think anyone can.  You have to do what is best for you.

Good Luck

Dacus
