Careers: Flying & Aviation - Cut-off age 31

Question
QUESTION: I turned 28 this past June.  I'm very interested in a career in Air Traffic Control.  If I enroll in an 18 month program at Univ. of Anchorage Alaska and  graduate in December when I'm 30 1/2 years old, do I have a good chance of being hired by age 31??  Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: Pete,
I have really no idea.  Have to taken  and passed the ATSAT yet.  Some people say that if you take and pass the test prior to age 31 then you can get hired.  I don't know this for a fact.  My suggestion for what it's worth, if you want to become an air traffic controller, is:

1.  Visit the FAA website and look for job openings that say "All Sources".  There will be some for VRA, CTI, and CTO.  These are not the ones you want.  They have a requirement, Military, CTI graduate, Control tower operators license.  You need one for All sources that have on requirement.  I have not seen one of these lately and I know that the system has a lot of trainees now.

2.  Enroll in the CTI class.  When you graduate you can apply under the CTI graduate requirement.
3.  Check the FAA website at least once a week for the All sources off the street bid.
4.  Be willing to go anywhere to take the test.  (My son was going to Hawaii from Tennessee to take the test, but he eventually got to go to Jacksonville Florida)  He was hired off of the street.

Whether you go to CTI school, or off the street you still have to take and pass the ATSAT.

Good Luck
Dacus

P.s I took the test in March, turned 31 in May, and was hired in August.  But that was 25 years ago.

QUESTION: So it's not too late, if I graduate, pass all the tests, & the FAA Academy to be hired in about 6 months before I turn 31?

Answer
Pete,
It should be all right.  It just depends on when and if the FAA is hiring.  You don't have to pass the FAA academy in OKC first.  When you get to the Academy you are already hired.  Look for the all sources openings, I think that that is your best chance.  If you take and pass the ATSAT within the next 6 months or so, you should have about 2 years to get hired.

Good luck
