Careers: Flying & Aviation/Preference for an aviation degree.

Question
Hello,

Before asking my question, I need you to know that I understand very well that an aviation degree is not necessary in order to become a commercial pilot.

I was wondering if there is any preference given by employers to pilot candidates who hold a degree in Aviation? I understand that it might not be very helpful when it comes finding a non-flying job, but when hiring for strong candidates with a good aeronautical science backround, does it help to get the job over someone holds a non aviation degree

Answer
In my opinion, no, I do not think an aviation degree is "preferred" over another major. As long as you have a degree in any subject, you meet the criteria. The bachelors degree is just a way for the recruitment department to thin out their resume stack.

Of the pilots I have flown with and the pilots I know at many different major carriers, less than 50% have aviation degrees. So that leads me to believe that the recruitment department really does not place an emphasis on it. The biggest factor is not your degree, it is your flight experience. You flight hours and type of experience (night, instrument, multi-engine) will be the deciding factor in you getting an interview, not what your major is.  Of course, not being an airline recruitert, that is only my opininon. However, from my own personal experience it seems to be the case.
