Careers: Flying & Aviation/airline pilot training

Question
I am 40 years old, and I am in the embryo stage of becoming an airline pilot with little funds. Am I crazy to follow a dream at this age?  What are the best schools to follow up with in the Atlanta Georgia area, and what are my options for funding such an endeavor.

Answer
Hi, Randall:

Thanks for your question, I will try to assist!

First of all, let me address the age issue.  Your age is not an issue as long as:

1.  You really enjoy flying (or think you will).  If you have little or no experience flying, you will need to take an Introductory flight as soon as possible....go to the following website to find a flight school:

www.aopa.org/letsgoflying/ready/choose/search.cfm

That site will give you information on how to search for flight schools in the immediate area around Atlanta.  Most will have an "Introductory Flight" package for you to consider....for $150 or less.

2.  ....you realize that airline pilots can only fly to the age of 65 as a pilot in command.  So, your career is time-limited by a mandatory retirement age dictated by federal regulation.

3.  .....you realize that you will spend five to ten years in training, formal education and experience building to get to that really good airline job.  Of course, right now is a good time to be in training and school due to the economic downturn.  And, in three to five years, airlines will be hiring again, if this downturn is like most of the others....

As far as paying for all of it, there are some sources available.  Check these websites:

www.uaa.aero  is the website of the University Aviation Association and it has an aviation scholarship listing.

www.avscholars.com is a website that provides aviation financial aid and scholarship information.

I hope that this information is of assistance to you!  If you have more questions, please send a follow up question.

Sincerely,

David A. NewMyer
