Question hello
could you please name 2 starting system for a gas turbine
other than a APU
thank you
jamie
Answer Hi Jamie,
APU stands for auxiliary power unit that is usually associatied with saving aircraft onboard batteries during start. Each engine has its on starting system that is apsolutelly capable to start engine during ground operations or during inflight start in case of emergency.
Gas turbine engines are similar to your auto engine, so to start one you do need an starter/generator that actually drowns power from either APU or an onboard battery. This system is common for PT6 gas turbine engines. While on bigger airliners APU is internal component of airplane in adition to help to start main engines id does provide electrical for passanger compartment, Cockpit electrical, NAV, A/C and so on.
In adition you are able to start an gas turbine engine in case of emergency with procedure called inflight air re-start. Where airplane pitches nose down to accelerate to best speed for restart of engine.
I hope that answers your question.
