It has been almost 8yrs working in this sector but now i want to do MBA simultaneously.I am worried whether it would help me or not.
Kindly help me out as I'm quite confused with my decision.

Answer
Hi, Insha:

It is nice to hear from you--I will try to assist you with your question.

First of all, additional education is almost always a very good idea in terms of advancing your career options.  The additional education can not only help you with your existing position, but, it can also help you begin to understand what you might be capable of in terms of advancement or change to another position (either in the same company or at a different aviation company).

Second, I would think that you should go to the human resources or employment portion of the company that you currently work for to find out what positions in the company either require applicants to have (or favor applicants who have) an MBA.  This information should begin to tell you if the MBA degree will be of benefit to you within the company where you now work.  Also, ask your company whether or not they will SUPPORT YOU (either with time off or financially or both) to pursue your MBA. Some companies will do this with certain employees who apply for degree completion programs within the company.  Also, your supervisor may have this information for you, depending on whether or not you want to work with your supervisor on this sort of program.

Third, I would also check with other airline companies to see how they value an MBA in their hiring.....especially when the MBA is combined with 8 years of experience in the airline industry.

Fourth, you will need to investigate your educational options for an MBA--find out if there is an MBA program out there that fits your schedule AND is a program with a good reputation in the aviation industry or just with industry in general.

I wish you the very best in your work toward an advanced degree!  Good luck!

Sincerely,

David A. NewMyer, Ph.D., Professor and Chair
