Careers: Flying & Aviation - insulin dependent diabetic wants to fly

Expert: Dacus T. Grant - 6/3/2009

Question
Hello, Can you please help me. I am 49 years old and have always dreamed of learning to fly. I contracted diabetes at the age of 30 requiring the use of insulin. Is there any way possible for me to get some sort of pilots license to fly myself and maybe one passenger. If so, What would the restrictions be? My diabetes is very controlled with no history of low blood sugar insulin shock reactions. I am on an insulin pump. I also have a commercial drivers license class A for large commercial trucks. I am on a medical waiver program to do this. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Dear Kevin,
I really have no idea about the medical qualifications for pilots.  I worked for the federal government and not for the airline industry so I don't know anything about the hiring practices of the airlines.  I suggest that you visit the FAA website and look under medical qualifications for private pilots.  I would think that if you can get a waiver to drive a truck, you should be able to get a waiver for a private pilot's license.

Good luck

Dacus
