Careers: Flying & Aviation/LASIK and recommended schools
Expert: David A. NewMyer - 8/9/2009
QuestionI am Helen and am considering courses between pilot and air traffic controllers. I have some questions regarding the requirements and what are some of the recommended schools or university for these courses.
If my vision myopia is L4.0 R4.0, can I still apply for the courses? I read the FAA requirements and it said achieve 20/20 with or without corrective lens. Is there a limit to the myopia without corrective lens? And, is LASIK advisable? Some say that one cannot fly if he/she goes for LASIK? and what about air traffic controllers?
Besides, what are some of the recommended schools for pilot and air traffic controllers? those that are highly recognized like embry-riddle aeronautical university?
Thank You.
AnswerHi, Helen:
Thank you for your questions, I will try to assist.
On the Lasik portion of your question, unfortunately, I do not know.....that is not an area of expertise that I hold.
Regarding recommended schools for pilot and air traffic controller preparation, I would suggest the following:
1. Go to the University Aviation Association Website at www.uaa.aero and click on their "Publications" link....there you will find THE COLLEGIATE AVIATION GUIDE. It is an excellent listing of collegs and universities (primarily in the USA) that offer aviation degree programs.
2. Go to the website of the Federal Aviation Administration at www.faa.gov and do a search on that site for the term COLLEGIATE TRAINING INITIATIVE. There is a list of "approved AT-CTI schools" that is a listing of all schools in the USA that are approved to offer Federal Aviation Administration-approved Air Traffic Control programs.
As far as recommended schools, yes, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University is a very good aviation school. There are also many others to consider, depending on what you are looking for in a collegiate aviation education. Check the above resources to make a final decision.
If you need more information on schools, please follow up with me using another AllExperts question.
