Question
Hi Dacus,

I used to be a flight instructor and am interested in pursuing an ATC career. I've heard that on occasion the FAA opens up jobs to the general public.  I've been keeping an eye out on the FAA site for a while and haven't seen such a posting. Do you know how often that happens?

Also, my two biggest concerns with an ATC career would be the ability to work where I currently live (Denver area), and the schedule. What is the probability of getting assigned to your desired location, and what are the hours like?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Katie,

Sorry about the delay.  Yes the FAA occasionally opens up job to the general public.  The last time I saw it was about 2 and 1/2 years ago.  Most of their jobs now have CTI or CTO requirements.  You just have to keep watching.  I know the system (trainees) are pretty full now.  I would check at least once a week.  Look for the jobs that say "All Sources" but don't have CTI, CTO, or any other requirement.

When apply you can specify the state you want, I believe.  My son chose FL and they asked him for his three top choices in the state.  He got his number one choice.

Days off are based on seniority, my son is current Tue-Wed.  His shift is typically evening, evening, midday, day, mid or day.  A lot of night and weekend work.

Hope this helps.

Dacus
