Question
Is a written endorsement needed in order to take the CFI written knowledge exam? If so, do you know what FAR section specifies that?
Thanks!

Answer
Steve,
No endorsement is required to take the FAA CFI written exam.

The omission of the requirement to have one means that it is not necessary as with other certificates where an endorsement is specified. The Flight Instructor certification requirements in FAR Part 61.183, 185, & 187 state to be eligible for a flight instructor certificate or rating a person must: ...(e) Pass a knowledge test on the areas listed in §61.185(a)(1) of this part (FAR 61.185(a)(1) is the Fundamentals of Instruction)...(f) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in §61.185(a)(2) and (a)(3) of this part that are appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought (FAR parts 61.185(a)(2) & (3) are pilot certificates and the instrument rating). No where is it required an instructor "[certify] that the person is prepared for the required knowledge test that applies to the aircraft category and  class rating sought."

Hope that helps,
Dottie
