Careers: Flying & Aviation/Commercial Pilot

Question
Hi David!  I have recently enrolled into a college that has a nearby airport.  I have since been excited about the idea of one day becomming a commercial pilot.  However, I have no idea where to start.  Is it hard?  How long is the training?  Should I join the military first?  What do you think?

Thanks!
Nick Biermann

Answer
Hi Nick,
The commercial pilot rating means that the pilot can fly for pay.  It is required for flight instructors, airline pilots, banner towing, corporate pilots etc.

The first step is to obtain your private pilots certificate, then intrument rating and then commercial certificate.  Once you have those you will add a multi-engine rating.  From there you will gain hours of experience and ratings for various high performance aircraft.

Rather than the military, I would suggest attending an aeronautical university such as Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (www.erau.edu)  They will give you the complete background you need plus a college degree.

Is it hard?  That depends.  It can be.  It does take a very big committment.  But if you truly love it, it is an awesome experience.

Good Luck,
Dave
