Question
I was wondering what the difference was between taking Airline/Commercial/Professional Pilot and Flight Crew program as my major at a college/university and taking the same program at an aviation academy? What are the ups-and-downs of both and how should I make my decision? Also any advice you have on becoming a pilot would be greatly appreciated, thank-you.

Answer
HI, Wes:

The primary difference between taking Professional flight at a college or university vs. at an aviation academy is the degree you would get from the college or university.  This degree will make a huge difference in your long-term pay potential and in your potential to get hired by major airlines and large national airlines.  The chief advantage of taining with an aviation academy is speed....they will get you your ratings and certificates much more quickly than a four year university, but, with no degree.  The cost of flight training at an academy is usually more expensive than a university, too....you do pay for that speed.

I think that the best advice I can give on becoming a pilot is to learn everything thourougly and definitely focus on your INSTRUMENT flying skills since those skills will be the ones most tested in any training program you might enter with an airline.

Best wishes to you,
