Question
Hi, my name is Sean Cole. I am currently resising in San Diego
California. I was a Crew Chief assigned to the UH-1N ( Huey), in
the Marine Corps. I was Honorably Discharged in May 2003.
Since then I have tried to work in the field of Sound Engineering.
Although the work is fun, it does not meet the financial freedom
that I need to start a family, and plan on my future the way that I
see fit. Aviation is something that I love. My goals in the military
were never achieved, due to a mishap where my back was
injured during an Auto Rotation. This resulted in my NOT
obtaining my ultimate goal to become a fighter pilot.  As a crew
chief, i became very familiar with flight operations. I was a
certified plane captain on both the Huey, and the Cobra. I
honestly was not the greatest mechanic, but was strong in the
air. I started my Private fixed wing certification, but after
obtaining my solo check, I flew the rest of my money away, and
still needed my cross country sign off's, plus my exams to
complete my liscense. But I simply ran out of money. I have my
G.I. Bill, and I would like to start a carreer in aviation. I am ready
to start, but I realize that without militay pilot hours, my chances
of a carreer in Rotar wing aircraft become limited. I realy dont
know which rout to go. I would prefer a carreer in Fixed wing
type aircraft, but I would enjoy Rotary wing as well.
If you could please take the time to help me, I would be very
greatfull. Any thoughts or suggestion?
Thank you,
Sean Cole

Answer
Hi Sean,
You really didn't say what type of flying you want to do.  The aviation industry is very competitive and difficult to break into.  If it is commercial flying that you want, most companies require a college degree.  Do you have one?  If not, I strongly suggest that you use that GI Bill to attend an aviation college such as Embry-Riddle (www.erau.edu)Not only will you get the needed degree but these schools have placement services that can set you up.   There are many other schools that you can investigate on line.
Good Luck, let me know how you make out.
Dave
