Question
Hello Dottie,

I am a military pilot for the AF flying heavies and will retire in 5 years (42 years old at that time).  I am trying to work my assignments so I finish up in the cockpit.  I know a lot can change in 5 years but, in general, how markatable are retired military aviators these days in their early 40s.  How about at the regionals?

Answer
Jim

Not having a military background I am not the 'authority' on the military transition but I would say you would be very competitive at both regionals and majors with heavy transport catagory turbine time!

The hiring is not quite what it was 5 years ago, but as you mentioned- a lot can change in 5 years. Perhaps by the time you get out, the hiring wave will have picked up again. Even if it hasn't with quality (heavy Multi-engine) flight time, you would surely be a competitive applicant.

I suggest going to these pilot message boards as they are the hottest sites on the internet for American pilots and airline hiring gouge-

Additionally, this site has members who are of a similar background that can provide insight-
