QuestionHi I am currently a student working for my private pilots license right now. I should have it by the end of summer. I plan on purchasing a small time builder as soon as I am done with my private, and use it to get my rateings. My father and I operate a small auto repair shop, towing company. I dont want to continue in this industry but I would like to break into my own 135.
I have pondered the idea of starting up my own floatplane service, and live in a large tourist community right now. Although we have alot of tourists around theese parts in the summer it is VERY seasonal.
While looking through planes for sale on trade a plane I noticed there were alot of reasonably priced twins for sale in cargo configuration. But when I started looking for a frieght haulers database similar to what they have setup for independant truckers I couldnt find any. Is there a market for a induvidual with a airplane, a 135 cert and a little ambition anymore?
I have heard storys from some old pilots about hauling for different cargo companys in there airplanes on short (100 mile) hauls but the last person who I have talked to about it hasn't done it in 20 years or more.
Any established 135's I have found are selling for millions and millions of dollars, or are simply not profitable.
Are there any avenues I can persue on my own without a million dollar investment and a huge risk? Or do I have leave the shelter of the family business and make 20k a year for the next 5 years or so to work my way into a "normal" job?
AnswerHi Jim,
I wish I had the crystal ball to give you the answer you seek. The aviation industry at present is in a lull. Things are slow everywhwere for many reasons (especially fuel!) Part 135 operations will probably never make you rich. A lot depends upon your location. Some operators haul cancelled checks at night for banks. Some provide transportaion around the Islands or sightseeing. Unless you have a good contract such as hauling a corporation's execs around or flying checks etc. you need to realize that work will be spotty and perhaps seasonal. If you do not have capital you should probably cover all bets and start part time.
Good luck in your pursuit. I sincerely hope you make it!
