Careers: Flying & Aviation/Vision and Pilots

Question
Hello,

I am a junior in high school in Chicago, and it has always been my dream to become an airline pilot. I am considering the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois, Purdue, Saint Louis U, and the Air Force Academy to reach my goal.

Lately, however, I have been having vision problems. I have always had great vision until about a year ago. Right now I am 20/30 uncorrected, which isn't too bad, but I am concerned that it may get worse. This is why I am not so sure about the Air Force, because their vision requirements are very strict.

What do you think my outlook is for a career as an airline pilot, assuming that my vision may possibly get worse within the next few years? Also, would you suggest the civilian route over the military route for someone who wants to fly asap? Finally, will the university that I attend affect my chances of getting a job as a pilot after graduation?

Thanks for all of your help,
Mike

Answer
HI,

I believe you are right:  The military is normally quite inflexible on vision requirements and generally wants 20/20 uncorrected vision.

The civilian route, which generally allows corrected vision (as long as it can be corrected to 20/20), will be your best route.

As far as which university to attend, each one has its advantages.  I would select one that has internship connections and/or direct hire or bridge connections with airlines as they will provide your best hook up for a job after graduation.  Right now, regional airline hiring is very hot and is expected to continue for some time into the future.  So, universities that are well connected to regional airlines would be your best bet.

I hope that this is of help,

Best wishes,
