Careers: Flying & Aviation/What to do after college
Expert: David Bidwell - 7/26/2006
QuestionI know that a specific degree is not necessary to become a commercial pilot. I have high aspirations on becoming a pilot someday. I'm planning to save up so that I could go to flight school to gain experience. I just want to know what should I do after college?
AnswerHi Kevin,
First off, I stongly suggest that if you haven't yet gone to college or if you can transfer, attend an aviation university such as Embry-Riddle (www.erau.edu) Not only will you get a degree, but you can get your ratings using student loans and financial assistance. Then when finished, they all have placement services.
You are correct that a specific degree is not necessary, however, preference is always given to the aviation track prospect.
If you do not go that route, you need to take the longer way of obtaining each certificate and rating. Many pilots have started this way. You could check into a flight school such as Flight Safety in Florida that specializes in professional pilot training or even your local airport that probably has a school.
Any way you go, you will have to begin by obtaining the private pilot certificate.
I also suggest that you obtain your flight instructor rating. This can be done with minimal experience and time. The advantage to this will be the opportunity for you to build the necessary hours that you need for experiance to land a job while you get paid (verses you paying!)
I hope this answers your question. If not, or if I can be of further assistance don't hesitate to contact me.
Good Luck, and may the wind always be to your back.
