I want to become a commercial pilot and was curious as to know if getting a degree in communications would be a good choice or if you would recommend somethig else.
Answer -
Hi, James:

Communications is a very good degree, but, you can get a degree in many forms of aviation.  Such degrees would allow you to focus more on your area of interest.

There is an excellent listing of colleges and universities that offer aviation degrees called THE COLLEGIATE AVIATION GUIDE.  You can order it from the University Aviation Association at www.uaa.aero or by calling them at
334-844-2434.   The cost is around $25....

Many of these colleges and universities offering aviation degrees provide excellent placement opportunities such as aviation internship programs, bridge agreements (to place you into a regional airline or similar job almost right out of college) and direct placement.  Each school will vary somewhat on this point, so, make sure you ask the schools that you are interested in about their aviation industry placement opportunities.

Best wishes to you,

Answer
Hi, James:

As far as what to major in, I noted in my prior answer that there is a listing of up to 200 post secondary universities and colleges that offer aviation degree programs....way more than just Embry Riddle.  That listing is the COLLEGIATE AVIATION GUIDE.  Ordering instructions were provided earlier.  Most of them offer some sort of Aviation Flight or Professional Flight degree...that would be your best choice if you wish to fly, regardless of where you expect to attend college.  Remember that in that listing of schools that offer aviation degrees are schools like Purdue University, Ohio State University, Arizona State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Purdue University...all very reputable four year institutions that offer aviation degrees.

I hope that this helps,

David
