Question
is there a quick easy formula to figure out in my head for descent planning. for example you are at 37000 need to go down to 11000 at 2000 fpm and 480 knots ground speed

thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Kyle,
If I understand your question correctly - I use the typical rule of thumb:vertical speed equals 5x ground speed. 2000 fpm is pretty steep. Obviously, many factors come into play such as winds, type of aircraft etc. Once you know your vertical rate you can easily figure the timing.
Hope this helped,
Dave
