Careers: Flying & Aviation/major concerns of your students.

QuestionI am an active MEI who is always trying to better my performance as an instructor. Here is my question. What are the 3 biggest concerns of your career minded students? How do you answer the questions regarding discouraged students seeing a big smoke screen of positive forecast by aviation publications and flight schools. Many of these publications and schools promote flight for self interest and profits. I would like to get some feedback on how your students are reacting. thanks Steve
AnswerHi Steve,
The biggest concern I hear from students is the question of employment. They wonder if they will be able to get a job. I deal with this by facing the fact that pilots are getting furloughed and many airlines are struggling. I then discuss the fact that technology is improving and that aviation is here to stay. We (society) cannot live without it. We depend on it. Therefore, the industry must turn around whether it be by govt. intervention or simple capitalistic maneuvering. I encourage them to follow their dreams. If they want it bad enough, it will happen.
Another concern that many have is the long road gaining experience. I tie this into the first concern. We discuss options such as flight instructing, commuters and corporate flying. I point out that these are possible opportunities to not only gain experience but that they should remain open minded to the fact that one of these may be a direction that they could find fulfilling.
These are the primary concerns. I am always honest and straight forward with my people. I tell them that aviation is not for everyone but the ones that have success are the ones with a true passion for it.
I hope that I gave you what you are looking for. If I can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to get back to me.
Good luck,
