Answer
Hi Liam,
Air traffic controllers separate aircraft in both the terminal and the en route environment.  We do this using radar and non radar procedures.  After hiring you will be in training for approximately 2-3 years before you are certified to work a sector on your own(become a CPC).  The pay scales have recently changed so I am not sure what they are.  In my facility I believe the the starting pay for a CPC(certified professional Controller) is about $80,000 per year.  We are one on the highest rated facilities.  I believe that stress is up to the person.  Some find it stressful and some do not, just like any other job. You can find out about becoming an air traffic controller at http://www.faa.gov
On the bottom left of the page under Highlights go to the link marked Air traffic Controller.

I hope this helps,
