QuestionI am an instrument-rated private pilot facing questions whether I want to operate the aircraft or be on the ground directing that operation and would like to know what you consider to be the essentials skills and personal qualities necessary to succeed as an air traffic controller. Perhaps you could even contrast between ARTCC and FSS personnel?
Thanks in advance
AnswerHi Tennison,
You ask a very tough question. I believe that the qualities needed are:
1. The ability to make quick decisions.
2. The ability to think three dimensionality.
3. The ability to revise a decision previously made.
4. The ability to stay focused on what needs to be done.
5. The ability to remember what you have done no matter how busy you get.
6. Not get tunnel vision.
7. The ability to communicate clearly.
8. The ability to hear things that pertain to you even when you are busy and in a room full of noise.
I believe that the following personal qualities make a good controller:
1. The will to want to do the job at the best of his/her ability.
2. The ability to study effectively and retain the information that you have studied.
3. A strong work ethic.
4. Come to work prepared to work.
5. Come to work every day.
These are only my opinions and I am sure that there are many more.
The difference between the ARTCC(Center) and the FSS( Flight Service) are very substantial. The main difference is that FSS personnel have no separation responsibility. In the Center and Terminal options we use radar and non-radar to separate aircraft. The Flight Service relays clearances and issues weather to pilots.
I hope this helps.
