Question
Mr. Riddell, are there places where I can get training to work in the hospitality business to work for people in private homes, like a butler?

Answer
Dear William,

Yes there are. As a matter of fact there are several, most of which do not have accreditation from any educational accreditation organizations from the states they are in, and they are very expensive. One of the problems with this is, it makes it difficult if not impossible to get a student loan if you need one. Also, the school may not be recognized. Without accreditation and high level references, you may as well make your own diploma and save the money, You have no guarantee of getting a job. You can educate yourself or, have your employer pay for it. But then that raises the question, who will hire me without experience?

What I suggest you do William, is contact some organizations on the WWW like the Home Staffing Network, The Butlers Guild, and gain some background and information on a career in private service. You can also take a home study course. Although I would strongly suggest a known and respected organization, like the two I have mentioned as an example.

With the growing wealth in our country, many wealthy families are seeking specialists in private service to enhance their lifestyle and free them from the tasks of running and managing a household. Private service can be very rewarding if you are lucky enough to work for a great family that recognizes your contributions and rewards you for your hard work and dedication. Like any profession, its all about what you can bring to the table.

As you investigate this career over the Internet, I would also suggest reading up on the subject. One of the top Authors is Steven Ferry, who has written several excellent books about private service. With some basic education you can gain yourself, it may help you get your foot in the door as an understudy with an experienced Butler or Estate Manager. Good Luck!
