Question
I am interested in applying for a Executive Meetings Manager position at a nearby huge hotel. The position calls for at least one year of hotel experience, which I don't have. It also calls for excellent communications and project management skills, which I do have.

Is there a way I can make a serious bid for this position despite not having the hotel experience?

Thank you very much.

Answer
A serious bid would will require some understanding of the position.  A hospitality certificate at the top of your resume would help as well.

Try www.aprinda.com for a catering manager certificate. This is very similair to a Executive Meeting Manager.  You could also try www.ecornell.com but that will take more time.

An executive meeting manager position often requires the individual to sell and negotiate the pricing, therefore, hotel sales experience is neccessary as well.  You can get this information from the two sites above.

If you have previous sales experience, combine that with a certificate, and demonstrate your ability to communicate and project management skills, you have a good chance.

If you are looking to break in to the hospitality business.  There are plenty of hotel sales and catering manager positions out there.  Check out www.hcareers.com

Also, I am not sure if you know, but the catering/event coordinator positions often require longer hours and weekends.  This is because you often have to be at the event when it is taking place.

Hotel Sales Manager Positions have more stable hours, typially Monday - Friday. Good luck, you have a chance, look professional, communicate well, and be sure you understand the position you are applying for before you got to the interview........Good Luck.
