Careers: Hospitality - Real Work from Home Jobs?

Expert: GAJ - 10/24/2005

Question
Hello, this may be a bit out of your expertise; however, I am getting desperate trying to find a real work from home position.  I have about 10 years experience with desktop publishing. I also have experience in these other areas: web design, databases, proofreading, commercial & home inspections, marketing and management. I am extremely computer literate and almost always find myself as the onsite helpdesk guy at every company for which I have worked.  I am open to new opportunities from which I can work from home.
Do you know of any real work from home jobs? They almost all seem to be scams. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Landon

Answer
Landon,

While telecommuting is becoming very popular these days, these types of jobs do have their limits and often you cannot just "apply" for them. For example, sole proprietors may work from home because they own their own business. Administrative assistants with experience may work from home because they can physically do most of their work from home. Medical transcriptionists, telemarketers, sales employees and others, just to name a few are all possibilities but these are broad in scope and you still need to narrow down to a specific field of interest before searching for such jobs.

While I am not experienced in this area, I can direct you to some resources that will give you a better idea of what to look for while you seek a “Work-at-home” job.

If you have any bit of HelpDesk experience, you may be able to try your hand at an IT job if that is what interests you. Granted, you may need additional education if this is the route you would like to take, but this I know is one of the fastest-growing careers today.

#1. Check out http://www.dice.com/
This site would be a great start if you want to see what type of IT jobs are open and where.

#2 Visit this Federal Trade Commission Article: A wealth of information is available here about Work-At-Home scams. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/invest/homewrk.htm

If you would like more specific information as it directly relates to the Hotel industry, please feel free to contact me again.

Good luck!

GJ
