Question
I am writing on behalf of my son who is a 3L at Georgetown Law in DC. He wants to do plaintiff side or public interest litigation. He is in the top 10% of his class, but has had difficulty even getting interviews with these firms. Meantime, his 2L summer internship was at a good corporate firm in LA.He got an offer from them last month and needs to accept soon. Any guidance about getting into plaintiff side or public interest lit?
Thank you!

Answer
Dear Martha,

Thanks for the question.  Your son can probably tell you that the legal market is extremely tight right now and that it can be very difficult to find employment notwithstanding the fact he is in the top 10% at a tier 1 school.

Whether to accept a job at a corporate firm in LA is a tough decision.  Most likely the pay will be good but there could be various concerns.  Will he be happy?  How many hours will he have to work?  Does he like the firm and the people he would be working with?  Does he like the work?

In many markets, finding a job in plaintiff's litigation is a function of networking and being in the right place at the right time.  I would recommend that he contact GT alum in the market that he would like to practice.  My guess is that they would be very happy to introduce him to their colleagues.

Good luck!
