Careers: Medical & Psychiatry - Am I actually poor and how will I pay for medical school to be a psychiatrist?

Expert: Dr. Kevin D. Kanz - 11/23/2008

Question
I am 13 and I want to go to medical school for psychiatry when I get older. And I know that you have to pay for it.Well I wouldn't say that I am low income because even though I don't live with my dad,he is rich and I live with my mom in the apartment building that he owns.HE owns a lot.My mom is on welfare and medical cards but I wouldn't call us poor.My dad gives us money for clothes and food and stuff like that.Very rare that we go without foor and that is because I eat it all or my dad doesn't give us the money or she just doesn't go to the store.Does this mean that we are poor. Some of my family is Indian.I also make really good grades. Are we middle class and how will I pay for medical school? Do I get a tution and am I poor or middle class or rich?"

Answer
There are a number of scholarships available for students who qualify.  Again, a school guidance counselor will be your best resource for these.  Categories for scholarships, grants, awards and student loans are generally based on the following for qualification: Income Status; Ethnicity; Scholarship (grades & test scores); Rural and Underserved (Need Based), Parental Status, Community Involvement/Service etc...

Hope this helps...

If you study hard and make good grades, the opportunity to attend medical school or some other professional program will come your way.  You don't necessarily have to be rich or middle class to be a health professional.  You just have to be committed to helping people.  If that is your ultimate goal, then you will find what it takes to get there...
Ask your vocational counselor at your school to give you the materials necessary to prepare for such a program.  Talk to health professionals and find out how they got where they are... This will give you the answers you need...
