Question I'm a high school student, and I've always aspired going to medical school after I finish my undergraduate work. However, I was recently exposed to the work of chiropractors, and it dawned on me that getting and M.D. isn't the only way to become a doctor. I noticed the chiropractor I was doing a clinical rotation with saw and knew her patients a lot more than a physician does.
Do you feel that in the end, after considering yearly malpractices and insurance and everything, that a chiropractor with a private practice will be more sucessful than an M.D.? who has a higher risk of losing their job in the future? I also want to incorporate having a family in my future...I don't know if that affects anything.
Answer Hi Maddie,
There is likely to be good job security in any clinical doctoral program you have an interest in. There is predicted to be a rather large shortage of primary care doctors as our population achieves a larger age ratio (more people growing older), and wishing to stay fit and functional in in their respective communities. Primary care doctors are divided in to three primary disciplines (allopathic, osteopathic and chiropractic). Chiropractors are uniquely suited to help manage this aging population because the majority of what they do is prevention of progressive, degenerative disease. They essentially help preserve function and restore mobility. Fortunately, chiropractic physicians can essentially keep their own hours and still have a normal family life. One of the major advantages... However, this does not automatically grant job security. Chiropractors like any small business owner must run their business, compete and recruit business. The more successful you are at this, the better you will do...naturally...
