Question
Hi, Jenny,
I am considering to become  a Physical Therapist Assistant. I would like to know about  the education required, licensure,  duties that the PTA performs. I live in Canada, but that's OK. Also I am interested if this occupation is in demand and what is the salary range.
Regards,
Yulia

Answer
Hi Yulia,

PTAs must graduate from an accredited program with an Associates of Science degree.  They must then pass their state boards to receive licensure.  PTAs take objective measurements and implement the treatment plans that are determined by the physical therapist.  The fields include cardiac, orthopedic, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, acute care and rehab.  PTAs are in demand, but not as much as they were even 5 years ago.  Salaries vary dramatically based on the region, but in the SouthEast USA, starting salary is 19,000 a year up to 28,000 a year.

I hope this helps!  Try http://www.apta.org for more information.

Expertise

I am PTA. I can answer questions for people interested in becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant. I`m happy to discuss questions about the education required, licensure, different areas of the field, and duties that the PTA performs. I can also help with questions about the differences between PTs and PTAs roles and education. In a more general way, I can answer questions about the differences between the PT field in comparison with the Athletic Trainer field and the Occupational Therapy field.

Experience

I have been a PTA for 6 years, and was a tech for 4 years before that. I work in an out-patient orthopedic setting, but am familiar with other settings in general.
