Careers: Medical & Psychiatry/path to becoming a doctor

Question
Hello,
I've always wanted to become a doctor or surgeon (not sure yet), and was looking for some more information.  I watch all the medical shows, ER; Scrubs; House; etc, but I'm kind of confused about a few things.  I'd like to know what happens after you enter medical school?  Is it the 3rd year that you start working in hospitals?  Also, what's the difference between interns, residents, and attendings?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi

to become a doctor in America or Canada, here is the path:

1) Get good grades in high school

2) Take the SAT's, do well

3) Get into a good undergraduate University program (minimum 3 years)

4) Get a really good GPA

5) Do volunteer and extracurricular work

6) Take the MCAT

7) Apply to medical school

8) Attend medical school (4 years)

9) Do well in the first two years of class work

10) Do well in the third and fourth years of hospital work

11) Apply for a residency

12) Do your residency (3-4 years)

Intern: someone in their first year of residency
Resident: someone who is doing their residency
Attending: someone who has completed their residency training and is now a full fledged doctor
