Question
Hello, my name is Matt Jansen. I was wondering what it takes to be a sports therapist. I believe you would know the answer. If available, i would like a step by step plan to being a sports therapist.

Thank you

Answer
To be a sports therapist, you would need to first become a physical therapist, then specialize in sports therapy by practicing in a sports therapy clinic after graduating.  You would need to take pre-physical therapy classes at the college of your choice, then apply to a physical therapy program (volunteer hours are always required for entrance, as is a high GPA.  Community service is also required).

Once you are in the program, you should request to have at least one of your clinical  practicums at a sports therapy facility.  After you graduate, you can begin your work in the field.

Just as a side note, you may want to go and become a tech or aide at a sports therapy clinic before you go to school/during school.  This will give you experience and also might help you get your foot in the door for future employment.

Good luck!

Expertise

I am PTA. I can answer questions for people interested in becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant. I`m happy to discuss questions about the education required, licensure, different areas of the field, and duties that the PTA performs. I can also help with questions about the differences between PTs and PTAs roles and education. In a more general way, I can answer questions about the differences between the PT field in comparison with the Athletic Trainer field and the Occupational Therapy field.

Experience

I have been a PTA for 6 years, and was a tech for 4 years before that. I work in an out-patient orthopedic setting, but am familiar with other settings in general.
