Careers: Meteorology - City/Suburb breeze

Expert: Donald Rosenfeld - 10/8/2009

Question
Is it possible to have a city/suburb breeze? If so, would you expect it to be more prominent during the day or night? Can this be explained.

Answer
Hi Lori

At night when the suburb cools down faster than the city (thermal heat sink) you could have a cool breeze coming from the suburbs towards the city. Usually that happens when the over-all weather pattern is weak and there is radiational cooling.
