Question
I have 17 years in the active duty Army. I am an E7 and just made the E8 list. But....I have not been to ANCOC yet. My question is, if I do not complete ANCOC before I reach 20 years will I still be able to retire as an E7 or will my retirement pay be down graded to E6 because I my E7 promotion was under the condition that I complete ANCOC at some time in the future? ANCOC at this put seems unnessary. Almost like having to go back to high school.
Thanks much in advance for your reply!

Answer
Hi Dano,

Almost all Army enlisted promotions require a certain amount of time in grade before one can retire at that paygrade.

Don't hold me to this, but I believe, that in order to retire as an E-8, you will have to hold that grade for a period of two years, after promotion. Chances are that you can get away without going to ANCOC for two whole years after promotion to E-8 is not very good.

Now, as to your attitude about training. *ALL* Training is beneficial -- ALL. The Army is going to give you advanced leadership training *FOR FREE*. What could be better than that?

Even if you won't use the training in the Army, it's beneficial for most civilian supervisory jobs, or even just for life itself.

If Your E-7 promotion was on the conditon that you complete ANCOC, then it could be stripped from you, if you fail to meet those requirements.

Even if you don't feel the course would be beneficial to you (I bet it would), do the math: Check out the 2008 Military Retirement Pay Charts at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/fy2008paycharts/a/retenlless.htm

If you retire at 20 years as an E-6, you'll make $1,528 per month in retirement pay. If you retire at 20 years as an E-7, you'll make $1,782 per month. If you go through the training, then stay on for an additional two years, following promotion and retire with 22 years of service, you'll make $2,246 per month. Do the smart thing.

Hope this helps!
