Question
If you have hypothyroidism that is controlled with medication can you enlist in the Army? I read in the Standards of Medical Fitness "current hypothyroidism uncontrolled by medicattion (244) is disqualifying"...does that translate to if you have hypothroidism that is controlled you can enlist?
Thank you for your time and assistance,
Jackie

Answer
Dear Jackie --

If you have hypothyroidism that is controlled medically, you are eligible to enlist.  The service doctors at the military entry point will have to agree that your condition is controlled.

Be cautious however, the military service environment often requires hard work, less than adequate sleep, and sometimes food that is not suited to the diet you need to maintain to control your hormone levels.  If your body is not accustomed to hard work and little sleep, and your hypothyroidism becomes uncontrolled during your training phase, the Army will discharge you with no compensation.

Please consider your limitations carefully, but do apply, if you truly believe you can meet the standards and control your condition with medication.

Good luck to you.
