Question
Hola, My name is Brian Lewis I am 18, from Puerto Rico. I enlisted in the Army National Guard about a month ago... I have a question that has been bothering me. If I am a reservist in the Army National Guard, when* can I be able to transfer or enlist in the Marine Reserve?  Before Army Basic training, after Basic training, one or two years after,or after the 6 year contract? Do I need to Discharge to do that?

Thanks

Brian

Answer
Well, there is a process in which you can request a conditional release from the Guard, however, they are rarely given.  Your Adjutant General may be more willing to release if you wish to join another branch of service.  If you have not been to basic training,  I doubt they would release you, but you could always ask.  You have to have good reason too, not just changing your mind.  You most likely will have to wait until after your six years are up.

Now on to my opinion.  Stay Guard.  I enlist many marine reservists due to the lack of activity they do while in the Marine reserves.  Many are unhappy, especially after serving active duty.  In my office I have working with me three former Marine reservists who all say they much prefer the National Guard.  More training, more of a real mission besides overseas, better advancement.

Good luck.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
