Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Marine Careers for Son

Question
My 18-year old son is currently attending community college working towards his dream job of working for the DEA or ATF. He plans to sign papers next week to enlist in the Marines, going in Sept. 2009. He needs to select several career options very soon. Do you have any suggestions of Corps careers that would help him more than others in attaining that end goal? Right now he's looking at being a helicopter gunner, but there must be something safer than that that would be just as beneficial. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Lori:

Door gunner is a cool job to be sure, but it probably won't help him much in his career choice, yes, you are correct there.  If he's going enlisted (which I assume he is), he'll still have to make time to work on his college (those agencies won't hire you without a degree).  He might consider intelligence, or combat correspondent (the guys who report, and take pictures of, the troops in action).  The correspondent school darn near gets you a degree upon graduation, and you get to do cool things as well.  Intell is similiar.

Both jobs require lots of writing, which agents MUST be good at, there are lots of reports, and agents do far more of that than anything else.  Anything that will help him do that is a good thing.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
