Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Becoming a Marine Officer with RE-3P Reenlistment Code

Question
Hello,

My name is John Martinez and I was discharged from the USMC with an RE-3P Reenlistment code because of what an MHU doctor told me was an adjustment disorder. I can guarantee you that If I went to a mental health doctor now he could 100% guarantee that I do not have that problem currently. I want to finish school with a Bachelors Degree and become a Marine Officer afterward. Will my RE-3p Re-enlistment code block me from becoming an officer or is a reenlistment code just that, for reenlisting only?

PS. I have only spoken to an Air Force Recruiter about Air Force ROTC and he said it shouldn't be a problem considering its a commission and not an enlistment, but I wanted to hear from someone in the service I am interested in. And Unfortunately, there are no schools around here that have Navy ROTC (for the Marine Option).

Thanks In Advance for the Reply!
-John

Answer
John:

First, go to a mental health doctor and get signed off.  While the officer recruiter may have told you it's 'not a problem', it may become one at the most inconvienent time.  That is your first hurdle to overcome.

The re-enlistment code is not only for traditional re-enlistments, but for all discharges.  The code characterizes 'type of service' for getting back into the military and for other things like gov't and civil service jobs.

While it IS a commission and not an enlistment, you will likely still need someone to sign off on the fact that the military (no matter what branch) is willing to commission you with this RE code.

I would talk to an actual officer recruiter and explain the situation to him/her, and see what they have to say.  Officer recruiters are different than enlisted recruiters, and are aware of various pitfalls and hurdles you might encounter with this, and will give you a 'no bs' answer.

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
