Question
QUESTION: Is there any way I can change my re-code from 4 to something were I can re-enlist?I screwed up and made a very bad decision.I have matured greatly and want with my whole heart to serve my country with pride. What do I need to do?

ANSWER: Dear Dustin --

Since I do not know the details of your discharge, or why you have a negative re-entry code, I cannot advise you on your prospects for getting it changed.

You can do one of two things.  You can see if another service will grant a waiver for your RE code, and accept you for enlistment, or you can apply to your service's board of military corrections, and petition them to change your RE code.

Please write back, if you have additional questions.  Good luck to you.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer.I'm sorry I did not describe in enough detail.I went into the Marine Corps in Feb.2000 and was discharged in Dec. 2000.The Marines gave me an Other Than Honorable discharge for unauthorized absence. My mother was having surgery and I was gone from school longer than was authorized.I was givin and RE-CODE of 4.Is there any branch that will grant me a waiver?

Answer
Dear Dustin --

The Army might give you a waiver, if you can show you have matured and will not remain absent without permission again.

You will need to find a recruiter willing to work the waiver process with you.

Alternatively you can appeal to the Naval Discharge Board to have your discharge reclassified.  If they deny your appeal, you can petition the Board of Naval Records to change your discharge classification.

If you get your discharge reclassified by one of the boards, you will not need a waiver to enlist.

Good luck to you.
