Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I'm in the National Guard, I'm working full time right now.  I was considering having surgery because I have really been struggling with my weight.  I have gone through the process and now I'm a candidate getting ready to move forward with the surgery.  I was told today to check out the Army Policy on this because it may be cause for med-boarding me out.  Is this true.
Thank you,
Winn

ANSWER: Yes, you would be getting an unauthorized surgery.  The militray has seen too many issues with wieght loss surgery.  Anyone with bypass surgery would be discharged, and they aren't too keen on the methods that tighten your stomach, too risky for military, go figre.

Consult a military Dr first, its also expected of you.

QUESTION: I'm just wondering why they perform these surgeries at many military hospitals.

Winn

Answer
Never heard of them performing them at militayy hospitals excpet on retired vets or at a VA hospital.  I could be wrong, that is why you should consult with a military doctor as well.  If they clear you for it, then you will be ok.  But getting an unauthorized surgery such as that can lead to non favorable action because it was performed without the clearance from the military.  The surgery would make you non deployabe for a set amount of time, so please consult a military Dr before doing it.  If you weren't full time, you would have more options to you, but being full time, you are bound by regulation.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
