Question
QUESTION: I have been on depression meds with follow-up therapy for about a year now, but I am just discovering that it was a misdiagnosis.  I have hypothyroidism which caused the depression symptoms.  The hypothyroidism is easily treated, and I am confident that an interview with any recruiter will convince them that I am perfectly sane and healthy.  It is my dream to join the army vet corps in 7 years when I graduate from vet school... and if there is any way for me to treat this illness and prove that I can hold my own in a stress-filled environment, please let me know.  Can I obtain a waiver for this?  This is extremely important to me, and I will go to any lengths to prove that I am healthy.

ANSWER: If you were misdiagnised, that is good, however, does the illness you have need long term care?

If so, you will not be able to join.

If you do not require meds or anything for it, then you will be fine.

The vet corps is very hard to get into, so make sure you are top notch.

good luck

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks.  Whether it needs long-term care really depends on the individual from what I've read.  I'm going to talk to my doctor about becoming healthy enough to join.
Also, I have a friend who wants to join, but he has genuine depression, although he is being weaned off of meds.  If he is able to get off of the meds, is he eligible?  I have another friend who joined right out of high school with bipolar disorder, but I'm not sure how he did that.  Is that waiverable?
I appreciate your quick response!

Answer
Bi polar is a definite no go and most history of depression with heavy meds is a no go.  Light meds over a short time is fine, like after a tragic event.

In short, most mental disorders are not waivable, the military just cannot afford to take chances.  Its in everyones best interest.

Expertise

I am a National Guard recruiter , been doing it for seven years and am a subject matter expert on qualifications for National Guard and I keep up to date on Regular Army regs and programs. I was in the Navy for 4 years and have 13 years in the Guard. I will not sugar coat my answers to you. They are usually short and to the point. If you need more in depth, ask me. Because each situation is different, alot of times you need to actually talk to a recruiter and let them evaluate your situation in person, by looking at your documents, issues etc. If I suggest this, it would be in your best interest to do so. Finally...thank you for your interest in serving this great nation of ours. Very few people can actually make the cut to serve let alone choose to do so. So thank you for wanting to and hopefully you will get a chance. Whatever branch you choose, thank you and good luck.
